About Bohol

Bohol is a province of the Philippines, in the country’s Central Visayas region. It comprises Bohol Island and numerous smaller surrounding islands. Bohol is known for coral reefs and unusual geological formations, notably the Chocolate Hills. On the main island, near the town of Carmen, these 1,200 or so symmetrical mounds turn cocoa-brown in the dry season, contrasting with the surrounding jungle's greenery.

Popular Tourist Destinations in the Amazing Bohol

Bohol has its own tourist attraction. Various interesting destinations from playgrounds, unique photo spots, to historical buildings can be found in this city. The following is a summary of five tourist attractions in Bohol which are very popular and frequently visited by tourists.

• No trip to Bohol is complete without seeing this iconic landmark, which is even featured in the local Philippine Peso currency. Bohol's claim to fame is the unique geological formation of over 1000 cone-shaped hills that change in color depending on the season – the Chocolate Hills. You can view the hills from the Chocolate Hills Complex when you book Chocolate Hills tours. There’s a viewing deck with a stunning 360° view of the cone-shaped hills. These giant mounds of chocolate-colored earth in the dry season turn green during the wet season. The hills are spread out on a 50-square kilometer land and vary in size.
• If you’re the type who loves the beach and islands, Bohol will not disappoint. Bohol is also known for its white-sand beaches, islands, and some of the top-rated snorkeling and best diving spots in the Philippines that are usually included in Bohol island hopping tours. Panglao is one of the most beautiful islands in the Philippines and is connected to the main Bohol island by bridges and can be traveled to by land vehicles. This is also where the new Bohol Panglao International Airport is located if you're traveling via flights to Bohol.
• The top beach destination on the island, where most luxury resorts in Bohol (some of which offer Philippine luxury vacation packages), beachfront resorts, glamping resorts, Bohol restaurants, and bars are found. Alona Beach is known for its long stretch of white sand and crystal-clear waters, making it one of the best beaches in the Philippines and one of the most beautiful white sand beaches in the Philippines.
• Considered to be an excellent alternative to the more famous Alona Beach is you want an uncrowded white sand beach with clear waters. A must-see in Dumaluan Beach is its stunning sunset. You can also find several cheap resorts in Bohol and hotels here for a fraction of the price of those in Alona Beach.
• Hinagdanan Cave excursions are a must-add in any Bohol itinerary. Not only because of its beauty, but it's also easily accessible from the Chocolate Hills and waterfall destinations in the province. It is arguable the most popular of the Bohol caves. The Hinagdanan Cave, one of the most beautiful caves in the Philippines, features a pool of clear water at the bottom. You can swim here under the mesmerizing sight of stalactites and stalagmites. The word ""hinagdanan"" means laddered in Cebuano. This now-famous Bohol tourist destination is said been accidentally discovered by a farmer who built a ladder to access the cave, thus the name.

Popular Culinary Tourism Destinations in Bohol

Bohol is not only famous for its tourist areas, but also for its delicious specialties. If you visit Bohol with friends or family, be sure to try the typical culinary delights of Bohol which are guaranteed to make your trip even more memorable. Here are the five best places to eat that you must visit when on holiday to Bohol.

• Calamay is a sticky and sweet delicacy. It is made of glutinous rice, coconut milk, and palm or brown sugar. Local guides say that the best calamay in Bohol can be found in the town of Jagna. Calamay is traditionally sold inside smooth coconut shells tied together with strips of red crepe paper. But you can also buy them in small plastic tubs for convenience. Book a Jagna calamay tour from the Bohol Tourism Office to discover how the Boholano pasalubong (gift from your travel destination) is lovingly made. Calamay sells for at least 100 PHP a piece.
• A meal you wouldn’t shy away from is halang-halang, or chicken simmered in rich and creamy coconut milk. Hot chilies are a vital ingredient to this beloved Boholano fare. The dish gets its name from the Visayan word for “spicy.” We first tasted halang-halang at the Bellevue Resort in Panglao. But if you’re heading on a half-day tour of Panglao Island, then try Bohol Bee Farm’s halang-halang over lunch. The bee farm and resort serves the sumptuous dish for 340 PHP a serving.
• Tableya or tablea is a Spanish term for chocolate tablets in disk form. In the Philippines, it’s the key ingredient for making traditional hot tsokolate or, as Boholanos call it, sikwate. Many small businesses around the country create and sell tableya for travelers to recreate the bittersweet drink at home. But Dalareich Chocolate House and its inspiring story stand out. Through the hard work and perseverance of the Polot family, the bean-to-bar chocolate factory produces award-winning unsweetened chocolate.
• Longganisa or sausages are a breakfast staple. Every town in the Philippines has its own take on the chorizo, and Tagbilaran is no exception. According to esteemed food writers Claude Tayag and Mary Ann Quioc, Tagbilaran longganisa is marble-sized and very similar in shape and taste to the sweet sausage of Cebu. They recommend grilling the sausage, charring the chunky bits of fat in the process.
• Reminiscent of the parched Chocolate Hills in summer, peanut kisses have been a Boholano pasalubong favorite for more than 40 years. Locals say that the snack was inspired by an American chocolate brand’s signature product. While the product’s back story remains a mystery, what we do know is that peanut kisses are light, nutty, and crisp. They are made from high-quality peanuts and egg white. Peanut kisses can be bought in stores and stalls throughout Bohol and even in Manila.
