Typhoon season is here and we can’t help but be reminded by past experiences with some of the worst typhoons our country has ever endured. One of which is Ondoy.
Tropical storm Ondoy, internationally known as Ketsana, hit the Philippines on September 26, 2009. It caused widespread flooding in Metro Manila and other parts of Central Luzon, which brought a month's worth of rain in just 12 hours. The waters rose so fast that people living in low-lying areas were caught unaware and had to stay on the roofs of their houses to avoid being swept away by the floods. At least 140 died from the storm, and more than 450,000 people have been displaced and have sought shelter in schools, churches, and other evacuation shelters.
It was indeed one of the most catastrophic disasters our countrymen have faced, and one that has taught us so much.

No matter how much preparation we are in, we cannot prevent nature’s wrath. “Nature is unforgiving and vengeful. What we sow by way of destroying the environment will come back to haunt us.” That is why it’s important to take care of our environment no matter where on Earth we live in. Even if typhoons stop to exists, there are other natural disasters that will happen to teach making a lesson.
We must be ready at all times. Even though we can never be really prepared for what’s to happen, we can prepare ourselves for the worst. If you live in an area where floods can easily happen, preventive measures can be done to prepare yourselves during the rainy season such as putting appliances in higher areas, putting up walls for your house, etc. Preparing an evacuation bag with all the necessities and important documents is also one of the ways you can prepare.
The value of human lives. No matter what happens, human lives are important. Ondoy and other natural disasters taught us how fragile life can be, and that no matter who you are, the position you are in, the wealth, background, etc that you have are only trivial when faced with life and death situations. Everyone becomes equal.
Save Mother Earth. Natural disasters like what Ondoy caused reminds us of how we treat our environment. Because of our negligence and carelessness, we’ve caused ourselves these challenges. It’s time for us to save the Earth if not for us, then for the future generations to come.
Anything can go wrong. The only constant thing in this world is uncertainty. No matter how much you prepare for life, anything can still go wrong. Thus, the saying: Expect the worst and hope for the best. And Ondoy has taught us that.
