There’s a perception that traveling by yourself can be dangerous especially for women. If you ask most women about traveling solo, the first thing they would often talk about is safety. Well, that may be well-intentioned, but in a perfect world, this shouldn’t even be a problem. Nonetheless, the world we currently live in has a very long way to go and plenty of surprises in store not even just for women travelers.

There are many reasons why solo traveling appeals to women in general. According to a survey made by Solo Travel Society, 46% of women said freedom, independence, and the chance to do what they want when they want is their reason; while 22% said they weren't willing to wait around for others, and 15% said their reason is to challenge themselves and gain confidence, and that solo travel lets you travel your own way. Whatever your reasons for starting your journey alone, know that you’re not alone on this.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we are looking at some of the best tips we can find from women travelers all over the world for those who want to begin their journeys. It may not be uncommon anymore to see women traveling alone, but we know how hard it is to start.

First of all, safety first - When traveling alone, you only have yourself to depend on. If this is something you have a hard time doing, then maybe you should think hard before deciding to travel on your own. This also includes depending way too much on technology. A lot of preparation needs to be done before you can start traveling. Whether that may be physically improving yourself or mentally - maybe even both, you would greatly benefit from it even when you’re not traveling. Also, if you’re worried about the dangers of being alone in a new city and different people, you can take self-defense classes for your peace of mind.

Choose your destination with Intent - Though research plays a big part in planning your trip, one of the easiest ways to begin your journey is to think about the place/s you want to visit and explore, and why you want to go there. It may come simply because you’ve read or watched about it or as deep as getting to know your family roots. Intentions can help make your trip that much more memorable and enriching. You can try choosing your route with your travel goals. Are you looking to meet people under a nice sunset drink? Try Boracay - you can see a number of our safe hotels in this destination, too.

Be cautious and follow your gut - You can never go wrong with women’s intuition. Don’t be afraid to follow your instincts if you feel uncomfortable or pressured. Other great pieces of advice from women travelers are to not let other people know where exactly you’re staying and to always keep your important papers, passports, etc secure, and to always have backup copies.

Meet other (women) travelers - Although this can still be done even when you’re with company, there’s nothing like being in a new place and meeting new people because of your shared travel experience of traveling solo. Be open to meeting new people from locals to other travelers like you. A great piece of advice to follow, “Be the traveler that you would want to meet on the road.”

Face your fears - One of the best things about traveling is you get to know yourself better. By traveling on your own, you get to find out and discover your limitations, strengths, passions, and more because you have taken yourself out of your comfort zone. Learn to face your fears and be open to changes that traveling might have for you. You don’t have to worry as this is all part of what makes who you are as a person.
