According to the World Health Organization, “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”, which means mental health is a core component of overall health. It is not only about the absence of mental disorders but also about the complete well-being of individuals. It is a state where an individual can manage his or her own well-being; and, is a fundamental component of our collective ability to live and work. It is considered a vital concern for society as a whole.

People have different degrees of health. Some people have good health, some have serious health problems, and some have little or no problems. Just as someone who has a serious illness may not have a mental illness, people with poor mental health may also have a mental illness. Being able to look at all of our problems and concerns is a key component of good mental health. 

Factors of Mental Health 

Factors that can affect a person's mental health include family background, socioeconomic status, and violence. There is also evidence that sexual violence is linked to mental health.

Mental health issues are also linked to various social, political, and health conditions. These conditions can cause poor mental health and worsen the existing conditions. Furthermore, there are also biological factors that can affect a person's mental health.

Simple Ways to Keep Your Mental Health

  1. Embrace who you are - We are all unique and comparing ourselves with others isn’t a fair game. Learn to accept who you are -your flaws, strengths, and everything in between. This way, you’ll be able to boost your self-esteem, especially on challenging days.

  1. Keep active - It is no surprise that our mental health is linked with our physical one. Exercising is one of the easiest ways to help lift your mood and help keep your body strong.

  1. Eat well - Food that is good for your physical health is also good for your mental one.

  1. Keep in touch - We all need to interact with people once in a while. Even introverts would find periods where they need to at least have some sort of human interaction. Keeping in touch with people around you will do wonders with your mental health.

  1. Talk about your feelings - Showing or talking about your feelings, thoughts, and emotions isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s actually quite the accept. It will also help you understand yourself better.

  1. Ask for help - There’s nothing wrong with asking for help. Just like being open with your feelings, it is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength, acknowledging that you cannot manage it alone.

  1. Take a break - A change of scene or a change of pace is good for your mental health. It can be as fast as a 5-minute bathroom break or as long as a 2-week vacation to the beach.
